Close up of core aeration equipment in Charlotte, NC.

If your lawn is having trouble growing lush, thick grass, it is probably because it doesn't have enough access to essential nutrients. Compacted clay soil is a problem in our area and it needs to be loosened frequently in order for your grass to grow strong. Core aeration will open up your lawn by poking many small holes in your soil, giving your grass roots better access to sunlight, water, and nutrients. To streamline this service, we offer a liquid aeration formula that covers your entire lawn and encourages greater seed rooting.

Because aeration will provide direct access to your grass roots, it is extremely beneficial to pair it with overseeding for the most impact on your lawn. Overseeding is the process of spreading a large number of seeds throughout your lawn to give your grass-less patches a chance to thicken up. With both of these combined, you will finally be able to watch your lawn go from brown, empty patches to lush, thick grass. We offer our services to residential, commercial, and HOA properties in both North and South Carolina including Charlotte, Mt. Holly, Belmont, Fort Mill, and other nearby cities.

Core Aeration is a two-step process.

The typical clay soil in our region makes it difficult for nutrients to get easy access to your grass roots and clay is also extremely prone to compaction. This makes core aeration the perfect solution for your weak grass blades. We offer our core aeration service from September to October for cool-season grasses and from May to July for warm-season grasses.

Our core aeration service is only a two-step process:

  1. Step One: We use machinery to pull 3-5 inch soil plugs out of your lawn. These holes are where the nutrients will reach your grass roots more efficiently.
  2. Step Two: We will go back over your lawn with our machinery to make sure that we didn't miss a spot.

That's it! After we are done, your soil plugs can either stay where they are and they will break down back into your lawn or you can go over them with a rake or a lawnmower to break them up faster.

Liquid aeration allows water and nutrients to travel deeper into your lawn's soil.

At RDS Lawn Care, we offer both core aeration and liquid aeration. Liquid aeration creates micro-fractures in your soil which allows more nutrients to travel deeper. We offer our Spring liquid application to lawns that have at least 75% healthy turf. If your lawn has large bare areas, we recommend our core aeration service instead.

Below are some of the many benefits of liquid aeration:

  • Your soil structure is split at a much smaller scale, allowing water to travel deeper.
  • It is designed to loosen topsoil and encourage deeper rooting
  • It averages more lawn coverage than core aeration

Want to add our overseeding service? We use seeds that are scientifically proven to succeed.

Overseeding is the process of spreading lots of seeds throughout your lawn to increase the chances of germination. The best way to know that the seeds you toss on your lawn are going to find their way into the soil is by doing it directly after you aerate. The seeds will fall into the newly created holes and it will significantly increase the chances of germination.

You can be confident in our overseeding process, as we only use the best seed for your grass. We follow a running seed trial performed by NC State. This trial tests over 200 varieties of seeds annually for color, disease resistance, and drought tolerance. We use seeds that are scientifically proven to succeed in our specific climate.

Each summer, NC State produces a list of the top 20 seeds and we select our fescue seed blend off of that list.
